Laying the Foundation for Growth
2/15/26 Susan Allen
Heb 5:7- ESV In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. 11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become
dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone
to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is
unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature,
for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
STUNTED GROWTH:
- Dull of Hearing—sluggish, lazy in our hearing (rom 10:17) so then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God
- Unskilled in the Word of Righteousness -inexperienced, unused
GROWTH:
- Intentional hearing (rom 10:17) meditation (Joshua 1:8)
- Exercising, practicing, putting to use, obedience
BENEFITS: Growth in your soul, capable of sharing with others, being able to distinguish good and evil/discernment, not deceivable, mature, stable
2 Cor 5:11-ESV Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15
and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.16
From now on, therefore,
we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was
reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Gal 3:13 TELLS US THAT Jesus was made a curse for ME (cursed is everyone that hangs on a tree)
WE will never follow and grow or change UNTIL we understand the foundational TRUTH of RIGHTEOUSNESS
Isa 53:1-ESV Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.4
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was
the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has
laid on him the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when
his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Gal 2:20- ESV I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Rom 5:1-6: Therefore, since we have
been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access
by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die
— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have
now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
15
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and
the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the
free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the
free gift following many trespasses
brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man,
much more will those who
receive the
abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to
justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be
made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased,
grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
ch 6
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father
, we too might walk in newness of life.
